Dolj County Historical Sites

Almăj Village

Almăj Village

Almăj is a community half way between Craiova and Filiasi, hidden inside the hills along the Jiu River valley. Here, the stone cross saved by the Alexis Project about five years ago, is still kept in the mud, wet and dirty, by the local authorities, even though it is a historical monument.

Also, in the back yard of a local school building there is a hill, running down to the field around the village, where there was a Bronze Age site, also a historical monument, destroyed by the passing of time and the neglect by local authorities. The site is unmarked, unprotected, covered with rubbish, already dead.

The local church, another historical monument, is in good condition, marked, protected and restored.

But, the most important mystery for us is the Cula Barbu-Poenaru of Almăj, which seems to be in connection with the local school building, renovated so well that…we do not know where is/was the old historical building monument…

Culas, or Manors (fortified houses), were the buildings owned by landowners to protect themselves from armed detachments of Turkish incursions in the 18th - 19th Centuries. Cula were a sign of belonging to the class of large landowners. Cula Poenaru has been maintained for the last 20 years, by works funded by local government funds. The Cula is listed as a National Cultural Heritage Site.

In the official list, here are the historic monuments catalog numbers:

1/DJ-lsB-07868 **** 2/DJ-lsB-07868.01 **** 3/DJ-lsB-07868

It is absurd, but often met with, that in the catalog the site is counted twice, first as the archaeological site, and then on another catalog as a site with a historical ranking.

For example, at Almăj there are only two sites, but the first of the catalog numbers above refers only to the archaeological site, with no other information, which artificially inflates the number of historical monuments of all kinds on the list.

We have reports that a mobile phone company wants to install a transmission tower on the site, with the agreement of the local authorities, but without consultation with the specialists charged with the protection of sites.

PGN A=156 metri N= 44.44702 E=23.70525

In lista oficiala, aici se afla monumentele istorice:

1/DJ-l-s-B-07868 **** 2/DJ-l-s-B-07868.01 **** 3/DJ-l-s-B-07868
