Gorj County

Gorj judeţ (county), southwestern Romania, occupies an area of 5 602 square km. The Transylvanian Alps (Southern Carpathians) and the sub-Carpathians rise above settlement areas in the valleys and lowlands. The county is drained southward by the Jiu River and its tributaries. Lake Ceauru lies southwest of Târgu Jiu, the county seat. Industries there manufacture wood products, textiles, and foodstuffs, and building materials are produced in Birseşti. Anthracite coal mines operate in Schela, and the towns of Ţicleni and Bâlteni have oil wells. Lignite mines are worked in Tismana and Rovinari, and graphite is mined at Baia de Fier.

Text above adapted from Encyclopaedia Brittanica.

In the north-east part of Gorj county can be seen many old traditional houses, many of them ornamented with a lyre, an ancient Roman/Greek musical instrument, as shown on the wooden fittings of these two houses.

Some have wooden toilets at the back of the house, as in Mecea Village, see our site, or with wood worked in a very clever way.

It is a poor economical area, but beautiful by its traditions and cultures. This area is a real wonderland for tourists, and only needs a little promotion.
