Oltetzu's Keys

Click on the photos to see an enlarged version

The Alexis Project Team went into the Oltetzu River's keys, at Polovragi Cave, to search, in the deep gorge of the river, about thirty metres below the main road to Polovragi Cave, just under the Arcina area, an ancient fortress of the Dac people, which is supposed to be on top of the mountain above Polovragi Cave, above it by about 200 metres. It was a difficult and dangerous trip, in the middle of the wilderness, to search for ancient artefacts in Oltetzu's Keys.

Jiu River artefact
In the middle of the wilderness, there is an old wooden footbridge over the Oltetzu River, coming from the mountains, and going nowhere.

Jiu River artefact
Adrian at the main point of the entrance to Oltetzu's keys, about thirty metres below the entrance to Polovragi Cave, and more than 250 metres below the ancient Dac's fortress of Arcina, on top of the mountain. There were no artefacts here, although Adrian believes that there must be a few artefacts which have fallen down from Arcina into the deep valley of the Oltetzu's River gorge.

Jiu River artefact
The "gate" or entrance to the key or gorge, looking from the lower part of the river, looking upstream. Here the "road" becomes very hard and dangerous, because of many stones falling from above, and there is little space to pass through the cold water of the river. It is possible to see an entrance to a cave, on the right, at the entrance to the gorge.

Jiu River artefact
Adrian and Alina met Casian, the previous head of the Monastery of Gura Motrului, resting here at Polovragi Monastery. He was a brother to Adrian, a very kind man, always ready to be near you. May he rest in God's peace, for ever!
