Racarii de Jos Ancient Castrum - Where is the Site?
Adrian writes: Here are a few pictures of the very important Roman site of Racarii de Jos, Dolj County.
As you can see, the area of the site is still under the care of Oltenia Museum specialists, and another step ahead has been made with protection of of the site.

Having regard to the Bulgarian efforts to respect the reality during any type of reconstruction of the site, I have to put two questions from the Alexis Project:
1. If we are to accept the economic reasons for making the reconstruction of the old structures only half a metre tall,
…. is it not imperative then to make the new structure more similar to the old - using the same sort of mortar, the same stones, the same style?
2 . Looking at these images, it is not just me who asks "Where Is The Site?

Racarii de Jos Ancient Castrum, 19th June 2013
At the ancient Roman site of Racarii de Jos, Dolj County, there was a huge press conference, led by Mr Ion Prioteasa, president of Dolj County Council.

Arh. Dr Florin Ridiche, the manager of Oltenia Museum and the Alexis Project have been closely involved in this project.
The Press Conference was attended by local and national media. This is a sign that we are prepared for future European projects in the area.

The chief of the site, Exp. Dr Arh. Dorel Bondoc made a special presentation of the site. The Press Conference was held to discuss all sites in Dolj County, such as Cioroiu Nou and Desa.

Racarii de Jos Ancient Castrum, 16th September 2012
Under the authority of Exp. Dr Arch. Dorel Petrus Bondoc, specialist from Oltenia Museum, the first step has already been made in the reconstruction of the ancient military castrum from Racarii de Jos, Bradesti village, Dolj County.

As can be seen here, the western tower and part of the stone wall is being reconstructed under his management.

Racarii de Jos Ancient Castrum, 4th July 2012
This is one of the long walls of the military castrum being reconstructed at Racarii de Jos.

The ends of the walls have been given strength and form by the inclusion of Roman tiles where necessary, as was the normal practice of the Romans when building stone walls.

The reconstruction has been overseen by the specialist of Oltenia Museum, Exp. Arh. Dr Dorel Peturs Bondoc, near the end of the 2012 work at this site.

Racarii de Jos Ancient Castrum, 2nd July 2012
Oltenia Museum is continuing to make a reconstructed model of the ancient Roman site at Racarii de Jos, Bradesti Municipality, Dolj County, for the protection of the ancient site, and to make it able to be visited by tourists.

Under the management of the specialist from Oltenia Museum, Exp. Arh. Dr Dorel Petrus Bondoc, the site is starting to take shape.

Here we can see a more general view of the site.
Another important site similar to the one shown here, which is also being restored, is that of Cioroiu Now, where digs will recommence in the middle of July 2012.

Racarii de Jos is an important historical monument of Oltenia, a Military Castrum which has been excavated for over 100 years by specialists.

The Alexis Project has been helping the specialist from Oltenia Museum, Exp. Arch. Dr Dorel Petrus Bondoc, who is in charge of the Roman military castrum at Racarii de Jos village, Bradesti Municipality, Dolj County, with the last few fragments of Roman bricks from the ex-lapidarium from Bilta village, not far away from the site.

The reconstruction of the castrum is moving very fast due to the help of Oltenia Museum over a very large area, from the beginning in the western part of it.
This site and Cioroiu Nou are the only sites visitable by tourists in Dolj County.

The well known specialist of Oltenia Museum, Craiova, Dolj County, Exp. Arch. Dr Dorel Petrus Bondoc continues to search in the area of the ancient Roman military castrum of Racarii de Jos, Bradesti village, Dolj County.

He has also directed the beginning of reconstruction of the ancient walls and the stone tower of the castrum.

Again this year, Oltenia Museum has decided to continue to search in the area of the ancient Roman cast rum of Racarii de Jos village, Bradesti municipality, Dolj county.

There is known to be here a very important military fortress of the ancient Romans, covering the defines of an important part of Dacia Malvensis, which is known today as Oltenia.

As usual, the digs are made under the management of the well known specialist of Oltenia Museum, Exp. Arch. Dr Petrus Dorel Bondoc, who is deeply involved in this research.
It is important to note that this important site of Dolj County is open for tourists, as is the other important site at Cioroiu Nou.

Research will also be started soon at Cioroiu Nou, as is the policy of the County Council of Dolj County.
A part of the external stone walls of the cast rum, including a tower on the western side of it, are already protected. The digs continue to show evidence of another part of the external wall.
