Filiaşi
The winter of 2011/2012 was especially hard in Romania, the hardest for at least 55 years, and possibly for the last 200 years.

In Filiasi town the snow was a metre deep, with temperatures below minus 20 Celsius.
It is very hard to get around, or to do anything.

The Jiu River was not iced over, because it functions to cool the electricity generator at Turceni, but there are many problems on the Danube River.
In the entire region of eastern Europe it is the same, but the worst is in the Balkans area, and especially Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania.

About two kilometres from the town of Filiaşi, on the road between Filiaşi and the foot bridge to Bilta, over the Jiu River, in the region of a point called Chimica, on the right side of the road is an old cemetery of Filiaşi, dating from the 19th to the 20th Century. Today it is covered by agricultural fields and wild trees. A few stone crosses from this cemetery were saved by people from Filiaşi and placed near the Filishano tomb, in the new cemetery of the town, but many are still in their original positions. Some were saved by the Alexis Project and placed in the Bilta Lapidarium.

This image is of a broken tomb, a hole in the middle of the area, with a few bricks forming a roof over the tomb and covered with earth and grass. Dr Gheorghe believes that this tomb is from the end of the 19th Century, and he will bring it to the attention of the Oltenia Museum for an evaluation of its historical value.
