Architecture - The Ten Hour Project

Ten Hour Project Street View
This is an excellent project prepared by Alexandru Gheorghe as part of his studies in Architecture. It is of very high standard, and especially so when one considers the very short time given for its completion.

Alex prepared this project for an examination of ten hours duration a couple of weeks ago at his University. The Examination is called 'Sketch', and the students have one of these each month.

The requirement is to make an entire project, without any guidance from the teachers, in just 10 hours. You start in the morning, and hand in the papers in the evening. In the meantime, you are free to move, or do whatever you want, so long as you finish the project in time.

This particular project had as the objective to complete an open corner on a small street in traditional 'urban tissue' (an architectural term for the layout of streets, open spaces and buildings that form the city), of roughly 18 metres in length, and between 3 to 7 metres wide.

The building was not to be more than 8,5 metres (8500 mm) in height at the start of the roof slope. It was recommended to create a basement, some kind of public function at the ground level such as a shop, a gallery, a small bar, workshops and so on, and with a dwelling upstairs.

Alex's proposal has two workshops at ground level, with different entrances from the street, with spaces for other functions in the basement, and a two room, approximately 60 m2 apartment, with a flexible layout.

The most striking element is the staircase, which carves a place for itself through the strong, rather full volume of the house. However, it remains, at least in its perception, as public space, and a gesture given to the street, creating dynamic spaces inside the building, with interesting perspectives.

Alex's whole project allows for flexibility in layout, as may be seen in the final .pdf, shown here at left, which he submitted at the end of the day.
